“Sticks and stones may break my bones but words may never hurt me.” If only the old childhood rhyme were true. The fact is, we are given one name to go through life with. When that name is maligned it may affect our job, our standing in the community and even how people interact with us on a day-to-day basis. We work hard to establish a good reputation for ourselves and it can all be taken away in a moment through someone else’s careless use of language.
Defamation Definition: Defamation occurs when a person’s character, livelihood and/or reputation is injured as a result of false statements made by someone else. When defamation occurs through written or fixed mediums it is called libel. When defamation occurs through spoken or non-fixed mediums it is called slander. In today’s modern world, the effects of libel and slander can be devastating as the rate in which information spreads across the country and even the world continues to increase as technology becomes more advanced. I have an issue w/ my assitant. I was hired June of 2008 and my assitant was overlooked for the position. She has since Jan/Feb. apperantly gone out of her way to wrench things at work so I would be blamed and fired. To the point it has gotten so bad 3 of my staff came forward. One issue was she has gotten another co-worker to punch her in so it would appear she was on time. I have emails from 2 of my staff and verbal confirmation from another of her vicious attacks about me. I even had a meeting w/ my boss and the 3 all gave verbal statements to him as well as her vial behavior. I now have this w/HR and my director but they look as if they are not going to do anything. My nerves are shot, I don’t sleep and I’m not sure what this person is going to do next. she has no idea I know and she is super sweet to my face and behind my back its another story. She has gone so far as accusing me of killing a clients horse, and told the client that as well. The animal died from EPM- long of the short its nerve disease- to long to explain. I don’t know what to do. I feel trapped. Her behavior will only get worse towards me.
